“A form should not occupy a room. It should appear to have always been there — and to remember everything that happened around it.”

Biography

Florescu works where certainty gives way to weight, balance and time.

Ioana Florescu works stone, bronze and wood as if listening to what the material already wants to become. Her figures hover between the classical and the abstract — a body half-remembered, a form caught mid-gesture, a void that becomes the subject of the work.

From hand-carved Carrara marble to lost-wax bronze and charred walnut, materials are pushed to their threshold: stone fractures, metal scars, surfaces retain the memory of touch. Each piece insists on weight, patience and the slow time of carving.

For ALTAR, Florescu represents a sculptural language rooted in Central European materiality yet entirely contemporary. Her work asks a single, lasting question: how much can a form carry before it becomes something else?

The Silent Witness — hand-carved Carrara marble
Plate I

The Silent Witness

2031 Scenario · Hand-carved Carrara marble

A life-scale figure suspended between classical presence and contemporary restraint — anatomy emerging from raw stone, the head turned away in withdrawal. The body as a material witness to time and removal.

Black Orbit — black Belgian marble
Plate II

Black Orbit

2031 Scenario · Black Belgian marble

A monumental loop folding inward around a central void. Dense black stone absorbs the light while the inner aperture opens a shifting optical space — sculpture as an architecture of pressure and gravity.

After the Storm — cast bronze
Plate III

After the Storm

2031 Scenario · Cast bronze, green & umber patina

A fragmented bust built from layered, weathered planes — scarred and sedimentary. Neither heroic nor identifiable: a portrait of endurance that refuses to repair every fracture.

The Long Return — hand-carved walnut
Plate IV

The Long Return

2031 Scenario · Hand-carved walnut

An elongated wooden figure reduced to a vertical rhythm of body, grain and incision. Its stretched proportions give it the presence of a standing memory rather than a likeness.
